According to the instructions in the PacsOne Server Installation Guide, if you've installed MySQL 4.1.x or higher, you need to load the mysqli PHP extension which is only available in PHP 5.x, not in the PHP 4.4.x you've installed.
So you'd need to either upgrade your PHP to PHP 5.0.x in order to stay with MySQL 5.0.18, or download your MySQL to 4.0.x in order to stay with PHP 4.4.1.

I began with PHP 5.1.1 as I couldn't locate any PHP 5.0.x distribution. So I had to download PHP 4.4.1. But now realise I am stuck.
