Problem loading imagick.so in MacOS X Server

Hi all,

I have a little trouble to install PacsOne in a MacOS X server environment (10.5.1). The imagick.so is not loaded when I start the latest version of xampp for OS X.

The error log in xampp shows the following:

I'm really lost on this, I already have other versions of PacsOne running on Linux, but can't solve this little problem in OSX.

Hello.php is working so far, but imagick is not loaded.

Could this be an incompatibility issue between 10.5 server (64-bit) and imagick.so?

Looks like it, as the current MacOS version of PacsOne Server is 32-bit only, so you should try the 32-bit version of the MacOS X 10.5 with PacsOne Server instead.

Or you can run all 32-bit versions of MySQL, Apache and PHP on this server, which should work in theory if the 64-bit version of Mac OS 10.5 is truly compatible with existing 32-bit applications.

I wasn't aware there is way to install Leopard as a 32-bit version on Intel platforms. I'm also not quite sure on how to start the xampp apps (Apache, PHP, MySQL) as 32-bit apps, since they will automatically start as 64-bit apps when the OS allows it.

I know there's a way to make the Leopard internal Apache start as 32-bit, but since I'm not using it I'll have to look into this. I'll do a couple of more tests (maybe with PHP4) and may even try the versions of Apache and PHP that come with the OS. I'm a little busy with other things right now, but I plan to have the new server up and running next month. I'll post a solution for this problem, as soon as I've solved the mysteries of 10.5 aka Leopard.

I have the same issue on a Mac Mini (32-bit).
From my web searching, it seems as if the pre-installed Apache/PHP packages are compiled for 64-bit architecture, while running on either processor.

So, unless imagick.so is compiled as a 64-bit module, it is bound to clash with the Mac 10.5-provided Apache/PHP and Stefan is out-of-luck.

It seems that my other option (since I have a 32-bit CPU) would be to recompile Apache and PHP to be compatible with imagick.so and be done with the pre-installed packages.

This should not be an issue in your case since your hardware platform is 32-bit, therefore Leopard (10.5) can only be installed as 32-bit on the 32-bit hardware platform, which will be compatible with the 32-bit ImageMagick PHP extension included with the PacsOne Server MacOS X installation package.

Looks like there is a mix up in the installation package for MacOS X, as the imagick.so module included in the package was for the Linux x86_64 platform instead of MacOS X. This bug has been fixed and you can download the correct imagick.so module from our website:

That's what I call perfect timing.

I tried to get this going with my installation of 10.5 server and had no luck. Tried everything possible, different Apache and php versions, 64- and 32-bit and nothing worked. I was ready to install Tiger again on monday. To make a long story short, the "imagick.so" you posted works perfectly for me as well in 64-bit as it seems.

But it looks like there are some other little bugs, there also in no "pacsone.php" file coming with the installation. Using "login.php" instead works though. I'll have to run a few more tests on monday and see if everything else works. If it does, I'll contact you via mail to purchase a license and more info I need for our other PacsOne systems (Linux) which need an update from version 3.x.

As far as Apache in Leopard goes, it's not pre-compiled for 64-bit only, both versions (64- and 32bit) are coming with Leopard. If more info is needed, please shout, I'll dig up the info on how Apache and PHP can be started in 32-bit mode (even on a 64 bit system). I think using the build in Apache and PHP is a bit more complicated than using the XAMPP package for OS X, but both should work.

I'll report back on monday if I was able to get everything going.

I second that.
Following Stephan's recommendations, I abandonned the stock Apache/PHP and installed XAMPP instead.
The install was a breeze in comparison, and the Image Magick extension loaded immediately.

While Apple may recommend to use launch daemons instead of startup items, both still work with Leopard. At least that's my personal experience.

Startup items are located in "/Library/StartupItems/" and launch daemons in "/Library/LaunchDaemons/".

There are several advantages coming with launchd, such as starting, stopping or reloading without affecting other jobs. This can come in handy, but in my opinion it's not necessary for mySQL, PHP and Apache. But if you run something else on the server besides PacsOne, this could be of some help.

Another option would be to use "/etc/rc" which can launch jobs at startup, similar to the Load-key in launchd.

There is a free software with a GUI that can create launch daemons files, I'll dig it up on monday in the office. I forgot the name, something with Lion... I believe.

Personally, I usually use what works best for me and what gets the job done. I think that's the easiest way and as long as there are no negative side effects, it should be fine.

But I'll also ask a friend who works at Apple what he thinks is best to use. But given he's one of the software engineers that helped creating 10.5, I think he's a little bit biased and will recommend launchd.

everthing seems to run fine now with the correct version of "imagick.so". I've already dropped a mail to Xiaohui regarding the full license.

As far as OS X goes, Lingon is the software that should help with creating launch daemons. Not sure if it will help in this case but it's a start.

But in general, the configuration/installation of Apache/MySQL/PHP is not as straight forward in Leopard as it should be. That's why I decided to create a little installation guide for the required services running on Leopard.

I'll use the regular (non-server) version of Leopard for this, the server version shouldn't be much different, but I'll check again. Give me another week and I'll have this up with instructions on how to install both versions (XAMPP and the versions coming with Leopard).

My installation of Xampp shows MySQL as deactivated.
I did run the security check, and set a password for root.

I tried to launch MySQL from terminal, but it still won't start.
Someone suggested it might be permission-related.

Any advice there?
